High Performance Software Foundation Welcomes Flux Framework as a New Project

By June 16, 2026No Comments

We’re excited to welcome Flux Framework to the High Performance Software Foundation!

Flux Framework is an open source, modern resource management and scheduling framework for managing diverse workloads at scale from containers to the world’s largest compute resources. The framework supports a wide range of use cases, from traditional batch job scheduling to complex workflow orchestration across heterogeneous systems. Flux Framework can manage resources across clusters, cloud environments, and Kubernetes deployments, with components covering distributed messaging capability (flux-core), graph-based scheduling (flux-sched), bank accounting (flux-accounting), security (flux-security), and Python, Go, and other language bindings for programmatic access.

Resource management and job scheduling are foundational capabilities for the high performance computing community. The need for flexible, customizable solutions, both in HPC and in general, has grown as environments become increasingly complex. Flux Framework’s modular, hierarchical design gives sites the control they need to optimize performance, enforce policies, and support diverse workloads at scale.

What Makes Flux Framework Different

Flux Framework focuses on flexible resource management for the exascale era, allowing for flexible modeling and scheduling of resources that exist today and those of the future. It is the system-level workload manager deployed on the number 1 Top500 supercomputer, El Capitan, and its modular design affords easy customization and integration into converged environments. At the same time it has a low barrier to entry, being runnable on a single machine, in a container, or under any MPI launcher to provide a user-level scheduler wherever one is needed, even under another scheduler.

Flux Framework is an active, community-driven open source project on GitHub, with contributors from national laboratories, universities, and industry. The project is committed to advancing open standards and interoperability across the HPC ecosystem.

What’s Next

As part of the High Performance Software Foundation, Flux Framework plans to continue growing its contributor community, expanding Kubernetes, quantum, and cloud integration, and improving tooling to make HPC resource management more accessible across diverse computing environments.

Future efforts will focus on streamlining job and resource management workflows, deepening integrations with cloud-native infrastructure, and making it easier for new sites to deploy and customize Flux Framework for their workloads.
